Cost of Attendance (COA)
The Cost of Attendance (COA) is an estimate of the educational and reasonable costs associated with attending at Curtin University for an academic year. The COA determined by the university is used in the calculation of the amount of financial aid a student can be awarded for a loan under the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program and/or a private financial institution.
Note: Loans that are assessed under the FFEL program i.e. the Stafford Loan and PLUS Loan, have maximum loan limits that are pre-determined by the U.S. Department of Education. As a result of this, the amount of funding a student can be certified for by the university cannot exceed the maximum limits of these loans even if the COA forecasts a higher amount. The maximum loan amounts can be found on the U.S. Department of Education – Stafford Loan webpage.
Unlike loans originating from the FFEL program, a student applying for a private loan can apply for a loan up to the pre-approval limit determined by the financial institution. Curtin University will certify an amount up to the COA for these types of loans.
In accordance with U.S. Department of Education regulations, the following items on the COA have been deemed appropriate for use by all students and for all types of educational loans:
- Tuition fees (according to the course and/or periods of study)
- Living allowance (2008 - $15,000 AUD per academic year)
- Books and Supplies ($1,000 AUD per academic year)
- Airfares/Transportation - $1,500 one way
- Overseas Student Health Cover
- Origination and/or Guarantor fees (if any)
The COA may also include and allow for:
- Dependent care costs
- Disability related costs
- Fluctuations in currency exchange rates
